Carly Meyers
Radio host is all that’s on Carly's resume. 18 years ago, Carly cracked the overnight mic at Country 105 in Calgary, just a month out of high school. Overnights quickly turned into weekends, which quickly turned into mornings/producer at Q107 down the hall.
She took over middays at X92.9 in Calgary days after her 20th birthday. Here she had the platform to find her voice, a voice that was honest, cool, and genuinely funny. It wasn't a punchline, it was a Carly line, something you couldn't find on Twitter, an awkward self-deprecating "omg guys, guess what I just did..." While we all know you don't need to be a huge music person to be a great radio host, Carly is one of those rare music fans, she cemented her place in the alt community as "that girl on the radio at every show."
After being moved to mornings, and 6 years after she started at X, she decided to quit and move to Australia to work on a farm. This is the one and only time she wasn't working in radio. This is something you should know about Carly, whatever she puts her mind to, she does, and she always wanted to travel the world. She went to 32 countries in a year and a half, it wasn't half ass'd, and it was worth it. She was in Budapest when 102.1 The Edge in Toronto called.
Carly was at The Edge for 6 years before she was recruited to head out west. These are some of her favorite years; being "the girl at all the shows," she had even more concerts to attend in Toronto, and the tickets were usually free! She had bands on speed dial and would do unconventional interviews, sometimes even posing as a character. Coming back from backpacking across the world, she was more creative, and unafraid to look uncool, making her more lovable. Men, women, and kids... Carly was often described as the best friend you've never actually met. The funny thing is if a listener did meet her, they became real best friends, immediately exchanging phone numbers. That's her favorite part of the job—making people's days. Carly has always been the person who invites everyone to the party, the person who makes sure everyone is okay while reminding them it's ok not to be okay. Carly's style is one that can't be replicated—dry sarcastic humour somehow filled with real warmth. When she left the Edge for a better opportunity, there were over 500 comments from listeners; they were going to miss her as much as she would miss each and every one of them.
Throughout the years, Carly did some VO for TV and radio, and while she doesn't have MP3s of some of her bigger work (Shreddies, Giant Tiger), she has this old VO demo that got her those gigs. I guess that's another thing you should know about Carly; she could have done a better job archiving her work.
During her time with Corus, she also voice tracked shows at FM96 in London and Power 107 in Winnipeg. She was also the imaging voice for Fresh Radio, writing many of their personality splitters.
So now it's 2022, and she's been offered a job at what would become SonicRadio in Vancouver. When it came time to hire a cohost, Carly felt privileged that Jay Brody would even consider leaving mornings in Toronto to join her. In her eyes, he was the best there is, the best there was, and the best there would ever be. That's a Bret Hart quote; he's a wrestler. Over the next few years, Jay would talk in "Bret Hart" often. If you ask her, she'll tell you this is the best radio she's ever done. To have a cohost as well-read, wildly creative, and not shy to talk about their catalogue of life experiences...this is the most fun a job has ever been. The ease of show prep and conversation makes time for social media. She's learned to film, edit, and post videos. She's learning to write great parody songs with the help of Howard Stern's current parody guys, Jay Brody and Roddy Colmer.
Carly and Jay had a couple of great years in Vancouver with some major acclaim, but the industry is what it is. For the first time in her career, due to budget cuts, she was shown the door. Ok, this is the last thing you should know about Carly; she always looks at the bright side, even when most people can't see it. She's excited to travel and live life to the fullest until the next gig. If you think you have it or if you just want to chat, you can reach her at cmeyers1960@gmail.com
